a week agoI have had three dogs over almost three decades. When my last one passed, after a few months I decided to start looking for a “connection” with my next fir baby. There was one in particular I felt drawn to at the Animal Welfare League. I thought I had thoroughly reviewed their site on the process as each shelter has different rules. I drove almost an hour, application in hand, ready to see if I would meet the next addition to my household. I went to the counter to try to talk to the man, but being in a wheelchair and the counters being so high, I told the man I would come to the side as it would be easier. He seemed incredibly annoyed. I gave him my application and told him there was one dog in particular I was interested in and would like to see. He took my application, asked which dog, said then said it was by appointment only and would not be possible. He then turned away as I asked was it possible to just take a couple minutes to see if the dog would be comfortable around the wheelchair. He said no. I told him I had looked at the site and didn’t see anything that indicated I couldn’t come see the dog (I even checked the website while I was there). He ignored me. I pleaded that I had driven almost an hour and could I just spend one minute to see how the dog would react around the wheelchair. I got a stern No I explained the website didn’t seem to indicate I couldn’t and he said it must need to be updated. I asked why couldn’t I just spend one minute and he said that’s the policy. I asked if I could speak to the manager and he said I am the manager. I waited a week and called to see the status of my application. I was told it takes up to three weeks to review applications but if I don’t hear back it means I wasn’t approved. I asked if there was a way to confirm and was told no. I was convinced my initial application was thrown out. Almost 3 weeks later I submitted another application. I called to ask how long does the review process typically take and this time was told 2-3 days. 6 weeks later and I have not heard back. I adopted from Border Tails Rescue almost two weeks ago and am happy with my little girl. It’s day and night between these two rescues and the other two I visited. I almost passed out at how strong it reeked of urine from the minute you open the outer doors of the foyer. It makes me wonder how awful it must be inside the cages and these poor dogs. The one I was interested in is still there! Something has to be done for these poor animals. Most of them have been there at least weeks. Only one I was also interested is off there website and I wonder if it was adopted or something worse happened. I read about the protests outside the facility and I can understand why. Someone has to do something to help these animals. I’ll be reaching out to whomever I can. Animal Welfare League should be ashamed of themselves and one would think since the last scandal with their board president and practicing without a vet license the new board president would have gotten it together. Not the case.5 months agoThey don’t help at all!! I tried to bring in a cat that my neighbor gave me because she’s 74 and cannot take care of her anymore. I unfortunately also can’t keep her because my dogs think she’s dinner. I tried finding her a home on the Facebook pages, but was unsuccessful. I bought her into the shelter and this rude lady (who claims to be the manager) told me she can’t take it because there is no space and that I would have to take it to the police station so they can bring it in. Does that make sense, I’m standing there with the cat, but a police officer has to bring it in. I called the police station and the officer herself said they are total losers there lol. She said they even stopped taking pets that officers bring in also. Leaving the police officers to travel very far to try another shelter. This is pathetic, and it’s sad because they’re a kill shelter, yet you still don’t have room. I’m glad I didn’t leave her there, she’s such a good kitty.a week agoi know it is a very overwhelming job and wish more people would love & care for animals the way they should be. . 🙏❤ so please be kind and patient to people calling or coming in to see or inquire about a dog. That is important and some of you at the front desk are very difficult to speak to and so rude. You give off bad vibes when you do that are only hurting your reputation! Not returning calls or answering the phone everyday is also very unacceptable. People are paying close attention now so be nicer! The man today was when I called and such a relief to be treated so well!!! I give him 5 stars.3 weeks agoIt’s a great place for low cost treatment for your pets. There will of course be a wait as it’s first come basis but the care is good. I’ve been here for a neuter surgery as well as treatment for ailment and they have been very good to me and my cats. Thank you!9 months agoMy family adopted a bonded pair of pit bulls from Animal Welfare League’s Chicago Ridge location last week. They are the sweetest girls and after them being in the shelter for over a year, we are so happy to be able give them a place to call home. Walter at the front desk, Karen one of the dog handlers, and the rest of the staff were very kind and helpful! We submitted our application online and heard back from Walter about a week later asking for any specific dogs we were interested in. We were able to come in the night of to meet them. AWL has so many looking for homes, especially of the pit bull breed. We did not have any issues with this place as we saw from some of the reviews but be patient yet persistent with them. They want the best for you and the animals. Please don’t overlook AWL if you are looking to adopt (Chicago Ridge is their only adoption location currently but they have other locations where they hold even more in the shelter). They told us their #1 need currently is dog food so we brought in a few bags and recommend, even if you are not looking to adopt, to donate! But all of the dogs at AWL deserve to be a part of a family and to find place that they can truly call home. I cannot press adopting here enough! You will make a difference in the life of a dog that truly needs it and deserves it!

in the last weekI went twice to look for my lost dog and the lady said they don’t take animals from Chicago. So what are they doing in Chicago? Let me find out you guys gave my dog up for adoption. I have a recording of the lady clearly stating they don’t take animals from Chicago. Even when I told her well she’s been missing for two weeks she could have gone to a suburban area. She still would not let me it. This place needs a clean up of customer service.3 months agoWent Saturday to try and adopt a dog, the person at the front was very rude. Told us to fill out application and to drop in a box. Today I called to ask about the process and the lady that answered was super rude and laughed when I asked why couldn’t we look at the dog we wanted to adopt. She laughed and hung up on us. But the lady had a FIT and threw our list away. The entire place smells like urine. I had to wait outside because my asthma was triggered. It’s a good thing I had someone with me.
